Black widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) moves cautiously toward fly trapped in her web to give a venomous bite to one of the fly's legs. Female black widows of this species have leg spans of approximately 4 cm and are distinguished by the bright red hourglass pattern on the underside of the abdomen. While probably the most feared spider, black widows are not aggressive and their bites are rarely fatal to humans.
