Orion rising over the Paranal Observatory,Cerro Paranal, Chile. Orion starts at bottom centre left, rising to top left. The bright star rising from bottom right is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The telescopes seen here are the 1.8 metre axillary telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The use of these telescopes helps the VLT to produce an image equal to that obtained by a telescope almost 100 metres in diameter. The VLT is located at an altitude of 2600 metres in Chile's Atacama Desert.
