Skull of Homo heidelbergensis, a hominin thought to be an ancestor of modern humans. This is Skull 5, the most complete H. heidelbergensis skull ever found (as of 2012). It was discovered during excavations at the Sierra de Atapuerca archaological site in 1992. The skull is some 400, 000 years old. It is thought the skull is of a 30-year-old man. The skull is nicknamed Miguelon, after the Spanish cyclist Miguel Indurain, who won the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia in the year of the skull's discovery.
