Animation based on satellite observations of Super Typhoon Haiyan traversing the Philippines and entering the South China Sea. The Category 5 storm, with wind speeds up to 314 km/h (195 mph), may be the strongest tropical cyclone ever to make landfall. It devastated large areas of the Philippines, particularly Samar Island and Leyte, affecting 11 million people. 2, 275 people are confirmed to have died, and the death toll is expected to rise further. This animation shows a combination of visible and infrared imagery from the Japan Meteorological Agency's MTSAT satellite starting 3rd November at 1630 and finishing 8th November at 1630.
