Solubility of hexanol, a relatively heavy alcohol. Alcohols are categorised by their functional -OH (hydroxyl) group. This functional group is highly polar and allows the alcohol to form strong intermolecular forces with other polar molecules, such as water. However, the presence of a long chain of non-polar carbon atoms hinders this solubility. Here, hexanol (CH3((CH2)5)OH) is added to distilled water. Although some dissolves, the mixture forms two immiscible layers. See clip K004 1196 for the same process with a lighter alcohol, methanol.
