Solubility of hexanol, a relatively heavy alcohol. Alcohols are categorised by their functional -OH (hydroxyl) group. This functional group is highly polar and allows the alcohol to form strong intermolecular forces with other polar molecules, such as water. However, the presence of a long chain of non-polar carbon atoms hinders this solubility. Here, hexanol (CH3((CH2)5)OH) is added to distilled water.
