Test for sulfate ions in a solution. A few drops of nitric acid are added, then a few drops of barium chloride solution. If a white precipitate forms, the sample contains sulfate ions. This is due to the formation of the insoluble barium sulfate, which precipitates instantly. See clips K004 2737-9 for all the stages in this test.
