Timelapse footage of a lava lake in the Halem'uma'u crater on Kilauea volcano, in Hawaii, USA. The surface of the lake is seen to be largely covered with dark slabs of relatively cool, solid lava, separated by cracks that reveal the glowing molten rock beneath. This situation is analogous to the huge tectonic plates that carry the continents, floating on the underlying more molten rock beneath.
