Test for sulfate ions in a solution. A few drops of nitric acid are added to the test solution, which is then shaken. After this, barium chloride will be added. If a white precipitate forms, the sample contains sulfate ions. This is due to the formation of the insoluble barium sulfate, which precipitates instantly.
