Transition between aerial images of Waterloo and the South Bank, London, UK, taken in the middle of the 20th century and in 2011. The area has changed significantly in that time. Most visible is the London Eye ferris wheel, casting an oval shadow on the River Thames. In the 1940s, when the first photo was taken, an emergency bridge crossed the river at this location, built in case of enemy action during World War II. This bridge was demolished in 1948.
