Flying ants (family Formicidae) commonly appear on exactly the same day in different locations in the UK summer months, but sometimes they come out over a period of days or even weeks. This event is called the nuptial flight as it is when young queen ants and males mate and begin new nests. Flying ants are preyed upon by birds and spiders.
