High-speed footage of red sprite lightning on a moonlit night. Sprites are a poorly-understood phenomenon, a form of lightning that occurs above powerful thunderstorms, at altitudes of 50-90 kilometres, in the ionosphere. This footage was imaged with an ITT Nightscope. Interestingly, the full moon is to the immediate left of the field of view, showing that a sprite is considerably brighter than the night sky near a full moon. Filmed in Colorado, USA, in summer.
