Rotors form downwind of a mountain range, where the passage of air over the range sets up a standing wave beyond it, with the formation of a horizontal vortex parallel to the range. Condensation in the uppermost part of the vortex causes the formation of stationary clouds. Filmed in the USA on a winter afternoon.
