Electrolysis of lead (II) bromide. Footage of electrodes suspended in a crucible containing lead (II) bromide. Electrical power is provided by a power pack and a bunsen burner is being used to heat the crucible and keep the lead (II) bromide molten. In its molten state, it will conduct electricity. The lit light bulb next to the electrodes indicates that electrical current is flowing through the molten chemical. Electrolysis of ionic solutions or ionic melts causes the ions to be deposited at electrodes of the opposite polarity. In this case, the negative bromide ions are deposited at the anode, forming bromine gas (Br2, fumes). Molten lead (Pb) is deposited at the cathode.
