Animation of lightning on Venus, the second planet from the Sun. It has a thick, dense atmosphere of carbon dioxide, with clouds of sulfur dioxide. The pressure at the surface is nearly 100 times the atmospheric pressure on Earth. The dense, cloudy atmosphere also reflects and absorbs most of the sunlight, making the surface much darker than Earth's. Lightning was conclusively detected by the Venus Express spacecraft in 2006-7.
