Electrostatics. A positively charged glass rod is held near a thin stream of water, and the water stream is attracted toward the rod. Water is composed of polar molecules, and in the presence of the positively charged rod, the negative charge in the water molecules is attracted towards the side of the water stream near the rod. The positively charged rod attracts the negatively-charged portion of the stream, deflecting it sideways.
