To the north-east lies Belgium, to the south the region of Picardie, and to the north and west the English Channel. The region has a population of around 4 million (2005). Its capital is Lille (grey, towards the centre of the Belgian border). Calais, the large port town and popular ferry crossing point to Britain, is on the northern coastline.
