Cross-bedding in sandstone rock. This section through a block of sandstone shows cross-bedding patterns characteristic of sediment laid down in shallow water, like a stream or river bed. It shows how the pattern of sedimentation has altered over thousands of years due to changing flow directions. These patterns can be analysed by geologists to reconstruct the conditions of ancient geological periods. This sample measures 250 millimetres tall.
