Victoria Falls, aerial photograph. Named by David Livingstone in 1855 after Queen Victoria, the falls are known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya or The Smoke that Thunders. At top left is the 27-metre- wide Devil's Cataract, while the two Main Falls (524 and 297 metres wide) are at centre (rainbow seen over this part). The rest of the 1700-metre- wide waterfall is not seen. The waterfall is formed by the Zambezi River falling into a 100 metre deep chasm running east to west across the flow of the river. The river is on the Zimbabwe- Zambia border. This is the western (Zimbabwe) part of Victoria Falls. Photographed in the dry season, October, 2006.
