Pneumonia, gross specimen. This is an infection of the air spaces (alveoli) in the lungs, commonly caused by a bacterial infection of the trachea and the bronchi. Infected regions are characterized by inflammatory exudates that give rise to extensive areas of lung consolidation. It begins in patches but as is seen here, has progressed to involve whole lobes of the lung. These regions are homogeneously dense and firm, and indicate infection of many alveoli. Symptoms include a productive cough, a fever with shaking chills, shortness of breath and sharp chest pains. Several areas of carbon deposits can also be seen, probably indicative of smoking.
