Macrophotograph of the head and compound eyes of a damselfly, Agrion sp. In this colourful blue species the mouthparts are seen (at centre); they are used for hunting and to overwhelm prey. All adult damselflies are predators. A pair of small black antennae are above. Straddling the side of the head are two large compound eyes, providing these insects with a wide field of vision, which is further enhanced by the mobility of the head. Damselflies are relatively fast fliers, but do not compare in speed with their dragonfly relatives. At rest damselflies fold their wings against the body; dragonflies hold their wings outstretched.
