Mosquito head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified male mosquito (family Culicidae). Its large compound eyes (made up of numerous red facets) is at top centre. Its feathery antennae protrude from below them, with its sensory palps (brown) visible at lower centre. The males' antennae are bushier than those of the females as they are used to detect mates by the precise frequency of their wingbeats. The needle-like proboscis (pink) used for feeding, runs down from centre. Only the female mosquitoes feed on blood, the males feeding on plant juices such as nectar. Magnification unknown.
