Black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus) taking off. The adult black-headed gull has a brown head in the summer and a white head in the winter. It breeds in Europe, Asia and eastern Canada. It is a small gull, with a wingspan of 94-105 centimetres and a length of up to 44 centimetres. This gull is an omnivorous and migratory bird, migrating further south in winter, although populations in the northeastern USA and western Europe are non-migratory. This population are non- migratory birds. Some birds are resident to western Europe and some will migrate to the northeastern United States. Photographed in winter, in Lazio, Italy.
