The day before their circumcision, Samburu boys set out in a group to draw water from a source that never dries up. Each boy will carry a new gourd-shaped container made by his mother from hollowed out wood. Before they return to their lorora (a purpose-built circumcision encampment), they will daub the right sides of their bodies with white clay and pluck handfuls of green grass to tie to their gourds and through the knots of their black cloaks.
