Magnificent desert scenery in the Nubian Desert of northeast Sudan has been created by the erosion of sedimentary rock, which in places is highly oxidised. The crescent-shaped dunes in the distance are barchan dunes, produced by the action of wind predominantly from one direction. They move with the wind anything from one metre to one hundred metres a year. The Nubian Desert is an extension of the great Sahara Desert.
