Howard Carter (1874-1939), British Egyptologist. Carter began his career in Egypt as an artist in 1891 at the age of 17. From 1899 to 1905 he was the first chief inspector of the Egyptian Antiquities Service. From 1908 he worked on excavations funded by the English aristocrat Lord Carnarvon. It was on one of these expeditions that his most famous discovery was made in 1922, the tomb of Tutankhamun. Following the discovery, Carter became an agent for collectors and museums. He gave a series of talks in several US cities in 1924, prompting a massive increase in interest in Egyptology. Photographed on 8 May 1924.
