Radio experiment. Historical artwork of a man using a primitive antenna (electromagnets, lower left) to receive radio transmissions. He is listening to the signals received using an earphone held to his ear. Experiments on wireless communications took place as early as the 1870s, but a practical radio was not developed until work carried out the 1890s that culminated in the work done by the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi.
