Mammography is an X-ray technique that is used to examine the soft tissues of the breast. Its principal use is in screening women for breast cancers. The glandular (milk-secreting) component of the breast decreases as a woman approaches menopause. Glandular tissue becomes replaced by adipose tissue, a fibrous connective tissue packed with fat cells. Here, fibrous tissue appears as the fine white network across the breast.
