Mosquito wing. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the edge of the membranous wing of the northern house mosquito, Culex pipiens. The row of scale-like hairs along the edge of the wing are sensory organs which provide the insect with information on external environmental conditions during flight. Mosquitoes are members of the order Diptera, and therefore possess only two wings. Their hindwings have been modified through evolution into halteres, sense organs used to maintain equilibrium in flight. Magnification: x120 at 6x4.5cm size. Magnification; x136 at 5x7cm size.
