Chanute glider test flight. Glider banking to the right during a test flight over sandy terrain. This glider was designed by the French-US engineer Octave Chanute (1832-1910), who did much work with the Wright brothers who developed the first heavier-than-air flying machines from 1903. This photograph was published in around 1902, and is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. Chanute's gliding experiments included a set of hang glider test flights in 1896 and 1897 in the sandhills on the shores of Lake Michigan. The aviators included Augustus Herring and William Avery.
