(Edward Montague) Compton Mackenzie (1883-1972) British author of Scottish descent, born in West Hartlepool, England. Novelist, writer and broadcaster he was a co-founder in 1923 of the periodical The Gramophone. Best remembered today for his novels The Monarch of the Glen (1941) and Whisky Galore (1947) which have reached a wide audience through film and television.
