Henry Morton Stanley (1840-1904) born John Rowlands at Denbigh, Wales, Welsh-born American journalist and explorer, on his 1874-1876 African expedition under the auspices of the New York Herald and the Daily Telegraph of London, circumnavigating Lake Victoria Nyanza and mapping Lake Tanganyika.
