Henry Peter Brougham, Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778-1868). Scottish-born lawyer and politician. Defended Queen Caroline at her trial (1820) . Worked for the establishment of London University, the first Mechanics' Institute, and the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and was a founder of the Social Science Association (1857). In Parliament he assisted in carrying the Reform Bill and introducued legal reforms. The Temple of Fame: Mr Punch welcoming ord Brougham who is on his way to make a speech promoting Social Science.
