Ginkgo leaves. Two autumn leaves of the Chinese maidenhair tree, Ginkgo biloba. The tree produces two kinds of shoots; long shoots and short shoots. These are the lobed leaves from a long shoot. The leaves are unique among trees in that they have no midrib and no network of veins; rather the venation consists of a constantly branching fan from the base of the leaf. This species of maidenhair tree is the only living representative of the ancient Ginkgoales (family: Ginkgoaceae). Ginkgo biloba occur as separate male and female plants. These leaves come from a tree growing in Scotland.
