Beech leaves on a twig. Beech trees (Fagus sp. ) are deciduous trees (ones that lose their leaves in the autumn). Several developing leaves are seen alongside the mature leaves. The leaves contain the green pigment chlorophyll that is used to trap the energy of sunlight during photosynthesis. A network of veins carries water and nutrients in and out of the leaves.
