Pollinated poppy (image 2 of 3). Flowering parts of the shirley poppy (Papaver rhoeas) after pollination. At upper left is the female reproductive organ, the capsule (green). At the base of the capsule are the male reproductive organs, the anthers, which produce pollen grains containing the male gametes. Here the anthers have shed their pollen and are drying out. Shirley poppies are a garden variety of the common field poppy. For an image of the poppy before pollination see B786/582 and see B786/584 for a photo of the poppy after seed head formation.
