False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the surface of a strawberry , Fragaria sp. (family: Rosaceae). The flesh of the strawberry, is here coloured red, with cellular detail and hairs. Green oval shields are the achenes (seeds distinct from the flesh of the fruit). The brown tubular structures are styles and stigmas of the female reproductive organs, protruding between individual achenes. The achenes are the true fruits which are borne on a sweet fleshy receptacle that is edible. Fragaria is pollinated by insects. It grows close to the surface of the ground on runners, and its many cultivated varieties are of economic import- ance. Mag: x20 at 4x5 inch, x12 at 6x7cm size.
