MODEL RELEASED. Paranasal sinus cancer. Face of a patient with an open sore (yellow) resulting from cancer of the left maxillary paranasal sinus. The paranasal sinuses are membrane-lined hollows that extend out from the nasal cavity into the facial bones. The maxillary paranasal sinuses are located in each maxilla, or cheek bone. In the paranasal sinuses, a cancer (uncontrolled, malignant growth) usually arises from the membrane, and is commonly a squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. The cancer often fills the paranasal sinus cavity and then erodes away the bone and the surrounding tissues. Treatment is by surgical excision of the cancer and radiotherapy. Photographed in Africa.
