Artificial knee. Part of a prosthetic knee joint used as a replacement for a damaged joint. This is the femoral component, which covers the end of the thigh bone (femur). Prosthetic knees are used in patients whose own knees have become stiff, painful or immobile due to osteo- or rheumatoid arthritis. They provide renewed mobility to those who would otherwise be severely disabled.
