Premature baby. Close-up of the face of a premature baby in an intensive care unit. The baby is wearing a hat to keep it's head warm. A ventilator tube is seen emerging from the baby's nose. This is attached to a ventilating machine which will maintain and monitor the child's breathing. Other machines also monitor the child's heartbeat and lung movement. Baby intensive care units monitor the progress of the child's vital organs until they mature. About 5- 10% of babies in developed countries are born before 37 weeks gestation, often for no apparent reason. Of babies born at 28 weeks gestation and given specialist care, approximately 80% survive.
