Hepatic & splenic arteries. Coloured angiogram (X- ray) of the upper abdomen, showing the hepatic artery (upper left) and the splenic artery (centre right). The hepatic and splenic arteries supply oxygenated blood to the liver and spleen (white areas, upper frame) respectively. These arteries branch from the coeliac trunk (green, upper centre) which branches from the abdominal aorta. In angiography, arteries are injected with a radio-opaque dye before taking the X-ray. Here, a catheter (long thin yellow tube, at lower centre) is inserted into the axis of the coeliac trunk to inject the dye. Also seen in the image is the spine (running from bottom to upper centre).
