Lens fibres. Light micrograph of a section through the lens of an eye, showing the arrangement of lens fibres. The fibres are seen end-on, stacked in long vertical columns. This fibre arrangement contributes to the lens' light- refracting ability. It also ensures that the lens can bend sufficiently to focus light rays from all sources, near and far, onto the light-detecting retina at the back of the eye. Prepared with a haematoxylin and eosin stain. Magnification: x130 at 35mm size.
