Small intestine. Light micrograph of a section through the jejunum, part of the small intestine. The jejunum is the site of absorption of the products of digestion. It is deeply folded and lined with finger-like projections (villi). These are lined with microvilli (purple) and together they greatly increase the surface area and absorptive capacity of the jejunum. The villi are covered in goblet cells (purple circles), whose secretions lubricate the gut and help in the formation of faeces. Beneath the goblet cells are enterocytes (blue) that absorb nutrients, and capillaries (purple) which transport the nutrients to the cells of the body. Mag: x29 when 10cm.
