Small intestine. Light micrograph of a section through the small intestine (jejunum). The jejunum is the site of absorption of the products of digestion. It is deeply folded and lined with finger-like projections (villi). These are lined with microvilli (purple) and together they greatly increase the surface area and absorptive capacity of the jejunum. The villi are also covered in goblet cells (purple circles), whose secretions protect and lubricate the gut and help in the formation of faeces. Beneath the goblet cells are enterocytes (blue), which absorb the nutrients from digestion. Mag: x340 when 10cm wide.
