The distinctive shape & bright colouring of the CRAY X-MP/48 supercomputer dominate the Computer Centre at CERN, the European centre for particle physics research near Geneva. The CRAY X-MP/48 consists of four central processors. It has a capacity of 8 million bits of shared memory & 128 million words (1 giga-octet) of solid state memory. The X-MP/48 was installed in 1988 to increase CERN's computing power in preparation for its giant new particle accelerator, the LEP (Large Electron-Positron) collider. Photo taken April 1989.
