VLT Survey Telescope construction. Engineer making a measurement during the construction of the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). This structure is part of the azimuth box (lying on its side), the mount on which the telescope will swivel horizontally. The hole being measured is where the telescope will rest on a ball bearing-type joint. The VST is a 2.5-metre wide-field telescope that will be used to select targets for the VLT (Very Large Telescope). The VST is being constructed by the Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (OAC), Naples, Italy. It is scheduled to begin operating at the VLT site in Chile in 2005.
