Spirit landed on the dry, rocky floor of the Gusev Crater on 4 January 2004. After examining the rock and soil around its landing site for just over a month, the rover journeyed more than 600 metres to the edge of Bonneville crater" (centre). Spirit's mission has been extended beyond the initial three months. It will try to reach the "Columbia Hills" to the east (not seen).
