Spirit rover. Map showing the path travelled by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit between leaving its landing site on sol (Martian day) 36 and sol 90, the end of its planned mission. Spirit landed on the dry, rocky floor of the Gusev Crater on 4 January 2004. After examining the rock and soil around its landing site for just over a month, the rover journeyed more than 600 metres to the edge of Bonneville crater" (centre). Spirit's mission has been extended beyond the initial three months. It will try to reach the "Columbia Hills" to the east (not seen). This image was taken by Spirit's motion estimation system camera during its descent to the surface of Mars."
