Voyager 2 false-colour image of Uranus taken on Jan 22nd, 1986, when the spacecraft was 2. 7 million kilometres (1. 7 million miles) from the planet. The picture is a composite of images obtained through orange & methane filters. The pink area centered on the pole is due to the presence of hazes high in the atmosphere that reflect the light before it is absorbed by methane gas in the atmosphere. The bluest regions at mid- latitude represent the most haze-free areas. NASA 5x4 number 86 HC 60
