Extrasolar planet around 2M1207. Infrared Hubble Space Telescope image of a giant planet (pink) around the brown dwarf star 2M1207 (obscured behind circle at centre). It is thought that the planet is a gas giant with five times the mass of Jupiter. The planet is around eight billion kilometres from the star, which is further than Pluto is from the Sun. At this distance it would take some 2500 years to complete one orbit. The system is around 225 light years from Earth in the constellation Hydra. Image taken by the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) on the HST in August 2004.
