Religious bells. 11th-century manuscript illustration of a man playing bells in what is called the 'Fourth Mode' (a type of musical scale). This illustration and Latin text is part of a tonary (religious music) in Aquitanian notation. It is from a Gradual (a book collecting the musical items of the Catholic Mass), and was originally produced in Toulouse, France in the late 11th century.
