The English Gentleman. Frontispiece to the 17th-century guide 'The English Gentleman' (1630) by English poet Richard Brathwaite (1588-1673). The artworks show eight stages (each with Latin motto) from birth to death: youth, disposition, education, vocation, recreation, acquaintance, moderation, and perfection. At centre is the ideal English gentleman with Latin mottoes stating 'hope in heaven' and 'feet on the earth'. At bottom is the Braithwaite coat of arms and motto ('I carry in my womb a noble child'). This guide, published in London, advised gentlemen how to conduct themselves in public and private. Engraving by Robert Vaughan.
